You can take the GRITS out of Florida, but you can't take Florida out of the GRITS!

Steve Irwin

September 4th was the one year anniversary of the untimely death of Steve Irwin. All this week, we have been watching Animal Planet and there many Croc Hunter shows. I miss Steve-O. Of course, I never met him, but I feel like he as a friend. He touched so many people, young and old. His enthusiasm helped people see the beauty in creatures they might normally have thought of as "UGH!" before...alligators, snakes, lizards and of course, crocodiles.

He filmed a couple of Croc Hunter shows in Florida, and I wonder when he was here if he noticed how many transplanted Australian things are now flourishing in our state...melaleucas, Australian Pines and scheffleras. They are trees that we are now trying to irradicate. Florida must be an awful lot like Australia because those trees sure seem to love it here!

I believe that Steve Irwin himself transplanted something here: His passion for wildlife and the environment. Sure, folks in Florida have always been passionate about their land and their native wildlife, but I think Steve helped boost things. Kicked it up a few notches. Helped bring it to our children's attention. He was crazy, but he knew his stuff.

I am helping to raise money for the Wildlife Warriors, Steve's efforts to help protect wildlife and their habitats. Please, if you can sponsor $1, it'd be great!!! Every penny counts. Click on the link to my Donation page...it's right at the top of my blog here...on the right! See it? Click it!

Help keep Steve's dream alive...his love, is passion, his life. Let those Aussies know Florida is behind Steve Irwin!

And don't worry, I won't beg for money. I've never done anything like this before, but I feel so strongly about this that I had to do it. November 15th is Steve Irwin Day in Australia. Show support and campout that night, I know I will! (Also wear khaki that day to show your support and remembrance)

I can't believe it has been a year. I remember waking up and finding out and barely breathing as it HAD to be a joke!

We don't have cable or satellite anymore, but I did catch a few bits and pieces of those shows in the hotel room. I'll be clicking on your link. 8-]
