Oh, if you don't know what kind of snake that is, it's a coral snake. Deadly venomous, yet there have been no recorded deaths from their bite (at least not in Florida). They are in the same family as cobras, but are rear-fanged. They have to get a really good mouthful and chomp down hard to inject their venom.
But really, they are pretty shy creatures who just try to scoot away as quick as they can.

Wow! I haven't seen a coral snake in years! When I was a kid I found one in my grandfather's yard. It was very pretty so I picked it up by it's tail and took it to my grandparents. I will NEVER forget the looks on their faces as my cousin started yelling "Red on yellow, red on yellow!" Still holding the snake I asked what Red on yellow meant and my grandmother said "It means put the snake down very carefully" LOL
You just proved how non-aggressive they are...and how damn lucky you were not to be the first person in Florida to die by a coral snake bite!!!!
And I always forget which is the bad one, red on yellow or red on black...thanks for reminding me
I think king snakes benefit from the coral snake's reputation... No one messes with them because they think it's a coral snake!
Lovely to see one again. They must be very good at hiding because I can't remember the last time I saw one in the wild. Just behind glass.
He was very passive and didn't squirm at all but he did scoot off pretty quick when I put him down.
My family still talks about how lucky I was that day.
That's the day I learned the saying
Red on yellow kill a fellow - red on black ok jack LOL
I'm hosting and the topic is "Back to School". Was just thinking about all the kiddies starting back to school and wondering if our Fun Monday participants are going back to school as well.
