You can take the GRITS out of Florida, but you can't take Florida out of the GRITS!

The Good with the Bad

THE GOOD:

We finally saw a Sherman's Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger shermani. My son spotted it darting across a cow pasture in Avon Park a couple weeks ago. I backed up so he could get a picture, but this is the best he could do. Can you see him on the right? I've been wanting to see one for a long time. Now I can add another critter to my life list.

The next thing I want to see in the wild is an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. You'd think with all the caching we've done, I'd have seen one by now, but nope!

THE BAD:

Further down the road, I went to turn around to show my friend an old abandoned house in the woods, and this happened.

My friend, Susan, was yelling, "Don't do it! Don't do it!", but did I listen? Nooooo... so we got stuck.
Good and stuck. I tried to shove sticks underneath the tire to see if it would help, but it didn't.

Thankfully, a very nice man pulled over and offered to go home and get a strap to pull us out. I gratefully accepted and a few minutes later, we were pulled free! (I really need a 4X4)

So, if you ever find yourself in Avon Park, keep your eyes open for Fox Squirrels and DON'T GO OFF THE ROAD!

******************************

So now, according to Mr. Obama, we don't need to drill for oil if we just keep our tires inflated and engines tuned up. *Slapping my forehead* I never realized the solution to our fuel problems was so simple! This guy SO deserves to be our next president!

Got it, no off roading.

Maybe if my tires were properly inflated, I would have been saved!

No, if we force automakers to produce efficient cars we won't need to drill for oil. Stop consuming so damn much.

You are right, Misti, however, it will take years and years to see major changes. (And Barack really did say that!)

*sbert* What an eejit! (BO, not you. LOL!)

Fox squirrels are so cool. We call them monkey squirrels. A rare treat, indeed, and awful hard to shoot.

We've had several diamondback sightings up here. Some moron killed a beauty at the end of our driveway a couple weeks ago. >:\

I saw my first Fix squirrel this past winter while we were out caching on Eglin Reservation. He ran right in front of the truck and we got a good long look. I was too busy gawking at him to think to pick up the camera.

We run into the rattlers all of the time. We had a huge one (probably 6 feet) living on our property in Blackwater Forest. Haven't seen him in a while but I know where he lives and I give that area wide berth.

I love the stuck pics! You might be dangerous with 4x4 though LOL

I've always been fascinated by abandoned houses and spent years as a child tromping through the woods to find them with my mother who is absolutely obesessed with them LOL

Funny, but deflating your tires some ("bagging" them) might have gotten you out of that situation.
Works on sand, wet grass ...maybe.

I love Fox Squirrels too. We have a few around here, but never on my place.

How cool that your son spotted this elusive squirrel and that you were able to ‘capture’ this image. As for the rest, I guess that’s what they mean by the saying about ‘the best laid plans going awry’ … I’m sorry about the mishap but glad for the happy ending. Once upon a time I drove a 4x4 and got terrible gas mileage and went through sets of expensive tires like there was no tomorrow. I’m just saying …
Hugs and blessings,

How cool to see a new animal! He looks like he has a looong tail!

Oops, we've done that stuck thing before, :) and we backed into a tree once while caching. :)

The fox squirrel was a first for me to see. It was a great joy! Thank you.

The being stuck in the mud in AP was also a first for me. Thanks again!
