You can take the GRITS out of Florida, but you can't take Florida out of the GRITS!

New Computer

We finally got a new computer, but there's a problem. It's not acknowledging the wireless receiver that has to be connected to it to get on the internet. My son called Bellsouth, and they are sending a cd that we'll need to run in order for it to work right. It's always something, but at least I can see a light at the end of the tunnel!

I haven't really had the time to mess with the new 'puter yet, but I do know that it's running Vista and doesn't have Word or Excel on it. That is just so damn stupid! The two most used programs and this thing doesn't have them. I have Office for XP. I wonder if I install that if it'd run right?

Next weekend we're going to Venice Beach to do some fossil hunting and geocaching. I'm excited. I've never been there before and am really looking forward to it. Hopefully I'll have some good pictures to post afterwards, and some interesting stories.

Garden update:

My squash flowered and started producing little yellow squashes, but then they stopped growing. The ends started to turn brown. WTF??? I ended up giving them to Harley, who loved every single bite.

My grape tomatoes are doing great! You're lucky if you get to eat one because everytime my little one goes outside to play, he checks for red tomatoes. If there's any there, he picks them and pops them in his mouth before anybody else has a chance. I guess they must be good! Thank God I don't spray them with anything...

The watermelons are growing well. No flowers yet, but I think they'll start showing any day now. Can't wait to see how they do. I have at least 10 little plants growing.

I planted a Miracle Fruit seed that I think is a dud. No sprouts yet. The same for some seeds from a viney plant (forgot the name). Nothing. Oh well...

The next thing to be planted will be the passion fruit seeds. I am mega excited about them and pray they sprout and take off!

I noticed the other day that my voodoo lily finally popped up again! It always makes me smile to see that thing. Don't know why, but it does. My blackberry lily is growing like crazy, as well as my beach sunflowers and white beautyberry. Can't wait to post pictures!!!

Give the miracle fruit time. Lots of time!!! Meanwhile, find a grown up one and buy it while you wait for the little one to sprout.

we just got a new computer and it was a pain in the butt trying to get it set up with the router. arrrgh!

It also runs Vista, and so far, the girls love it. It came with Word, but not Exel, or more than half the programs we had on the old 'puter!

I'd lo e to see pics of your voodoo lily and blackberry lily, as I've never seen them!

btw, you can post the list for
"you might be a Floridian if..." anytime! LOL It was just an email. :)

I thought us South Floridians couldn't grow vegetable gardens until October? Am I wrong? If so - I would love to get a start on making a veggie garden.

If you want to avoid the expense of Microsoft Office, check out OpenOffice.org for a FREE alternative :)

I love getting a new puter, but hate setting them up. Sure hope you get it all straightened out soonly. I'd love to see pics from your fossil-hunting adventure.

I didn't plant watermelons, but I've got some cantaloupes and honeydews flowering. Can't wait to dig into some of those babies.

I was watching some passion vines up the road, but the steenkin' county mowed everything down. I found some more in a new subdivision... now I just need to beat the critters to the fruits.

Miracle fruit is so cool, I hope the seed sprouts! We want to plant some when we get back to Florida. Hope your wireless is up and running soon!!!

I’ve followed your ‘computer’ tale of woe with interest in Google Reader, but had trouble commenting because MY aging Dell Inspiron 9100 has been giving ME fits … locking up and/or shutting down at the most inopportune times. I’m wondering what kind of computer you settled upon?

After doing considerable research, I settled on another Dell (wrote about it in my last Friday Haiku #47) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival … though that may take up to two weeks. Because it’s coming with Vista (and because I’ve been using an OLD version of Office from 1998), I ordered it WITH the ‘student’ version of Office (comes with Word, Powerpoint, & Excel … but not Access or Outlook) … but I’m hoping Vista won’t be too different than XP Pro (or easy enough for me to figure out on my own since there’s no one to trouble-shoot for me). By ordering it directly from Dell, I was able to get ‘support packages’ tacked on to what I’d planned to buy from Costco for about the same price, so I’ll have telephone support (and a bunch of other stuph) for 3 years.

Good luck to you with all of this. Glad parts of your your garden are doing well … and hope the squask & ‘miracle fruit’ come through for you. Enjoy your visit to and fossil hunting in Venice Beach. Wheee … I’m glad your time on the phone with Bellsouth paid off!
Hugs and blessings,
